As we hit the home stretch of June, the lineup of exciting Pride events to be found in Austin is still going strong.

Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth, often referred to as “Freedom Day,” honors the historic moment when slavery was abolished in Texas. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect back in 1863, several states under Confederate control didn’t put it into practice for quite some time. It wasn’t until June 19, 1965 that the winds of change blew into Galveston Bay, Texas. On this day, Union troops led by General Gordon Granger arrived, announcing that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were now free, all by the power of an executive decree.

Celebrated as our “second Independence Day,” Juneteenth stands as the longest-running national commemoration of slavery’s end in the United States. It heralded a new age where individuals could define their identities outside of race, cultivate a strong sense of ethnic pride, and lay the groundwork for economic success for the generations that would follow. Juneteenth, therefore, is not just a celebration of freedom, but also a recognition of the enduring spirit of progress and resilience.

4th of July

Get ready for Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic! Our Austin treasure, Willie Nelson, started this annual shindig back in 1972, and this year, he’s taking over Q2 Stadium, the stomping grounds of Austin FC, for an unforgettable picnic and fireworks extravaganza. But that’s not all! Willie Nelson & Family are headlining, and they’ve brought along a constellation of talent to light up the stage. The lineup is packed with stars like Tyler Childers, Dwight Yoakam, Shakey Graves, Shane Smith & the Saints, Sierra Ferrell, Asleep at the Wheel, and Particle Kid. This is a star-spangled bash you don’t want to miss!

You’re in for a treat with the Downtown Fireworks display. There are a number of prime spots to catch the spectacle. Consider pulling up a stool at one of our many Downtown Rooftop lounges for an unimpeded view of the sky. Or, how about soaking in the view along the scenic Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail or right from the heart of Zilker Park? Not to mention, Barton Springs Pool offers a unique vantage point (just be ready for the refreshing 68-degree water temp). Just a heads up— these spots can fill up fast, so make sure to stake out your spot early!
