A year ago, our lives changed forever. Harlow, our sweet daughter, was born, and somehow an entire year has already flown by. It is hard to put the last twelve months into words, but one feeling rises above all the others: gratitude. Gratitude for every tiny milestone, every late-night rocking session, every giggle that lights up the rooms in ways we could not have imagined before she arrived.
People often say that becoming a parent changes you, and they are right, though not always in the way you expect. It is not just about feeling bigger emotions or living busier days. It is the quiet work of the heart expanding, opening into a deeper well of love and patience than I ever knew I had.
In my work, I have spent years helping people find the right home for their next chapter. I thought I understood what families were looking for (and in a lot of ways, I did). But living it now, I see it differently. It is not just about a bigger backyard or an extra bedroom. It is about the place where your baby takes their first steps. Where holidays traditions take shape. Where you build the kind of memories you want to hold onto. A house needs to fit your life today, but it also needs to grow with you into everything that is coming next.
Another thing I have come to understand is how community takes on new meaning. Before Harlow, we had wonderful friends, neighbors, and support systems, and we still do. But fatherhood has helped me see another side of it. Community is made up of the people who drop off coffee when they know you haven’t slept, the ones who celebrate your baby’s milestones like they are part of their own family, and the ones who stand with you through every season of life. Having Harlow has helped me see more clearly what has always been true: real community is built by the people who show up, who notice when it matters, and who walk through life with you. It was always there, but I am grateful to experience it more deeply now than ever before.
Happy first birthday, Harlow. You have given me new eyes for everything I thought I already understood and a deeper appreciation for everything still to come.
